Tell them you love them (if they’re okay with that!)

Educate yourself about the facts of fibromyalgia from reputable, clinically researched sources.

Ask politely if there is anything you can do to help them cope when spending time with them. Let them make the final decision to accept or decline help, they may not feel like they need it or may not feel comfortable accepting it.

Avoid telling them about amazing new treatments or herbal remedies you’ve recently heard of. Chances are, they’ve already heard of them or even tried them. People with fibromyalgia hear these sorts of suggestions on a regular basis, and many times they do not sound supportive at all.

If they come to your home to visit, ask if there are any changes you can make to the space to make it more accessible and comfortable for them.

If they have particular triggers that make their symptoms worse, do your best to avoid having the triggers present when the person is around.

But most importantly, believe them. Fibromyalgia is a real disease that limits everyday activity and has no cure. Because it does not have visible markers, people with fibromyalgia can feel isolated and ignored because friends, family and even doctors do not believe that their symptoms are real. If you show them that you believe them about their experiences, it shows them that they are not alone in the world.
